About Me

I'm a PhD student researching the role of the archaeological dead in contemporary British society. Think of this as a scrapbook of all the interesting links, snippets of information and random bits and bobs I come across pertaining to death, dying and the dead. Enjoy?!

Contemporary jeweller Kerry Howley’s debut collection Attraction/Aversion is a material exploration of how people can feel seemingly opposing emotional responses simultaneously.
The necklaces are made of human hair, a familiar material that we take pride in. However once off of the body hair becomes an innate source of aversion. Kerry wanted to see if she could make discarded hair attractive again.
Through the familiar form of a necklace, and using patterns and symmetry that are instinctively pleasing, Kerry has created a delicate balance between the viewer/wearer’s feelings of aversion and attraction.

The Royal Society and the V&A tell us what happens to your brain when you enter a museum…

In this short film, specially commissioned as part of the Royal Society’s 350th anniversary celebrations in 2010, Professor Uta Frith FRS and her young companion, Amalie Heath-Born, explore what goes on inside our brains when we view the treasures on display at the Victoria and Albert Museum.

Carey Born, a London-based freelance film maker, was inspired to make the film when she learned that Professor Frith was giving a talk about the effect of the museum environment on the brain at the V&A, having been invited to give their 2010 Henry Cole lecture.
